Offers Boys & Girls Club of Stanton a “Bright Spot”

Stanton, California, July – Thanks to a new partnership between Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) and the Walmart Foundation, Boys & Girls Clubs of Stanton has received a $10,000 grant to launch a new reading initiative that promotes both educational and leisure reading for adolescents. The Walmart Foundation’s Bright Spot for Reading Initiative for Adolescent Readers will help create a Reading Center, provide training for staff and encourage intercommunity relationships to ensure the success of young members.

Nationally, the Walmart Foundation awarded Boys & Girls Clubs of America with $1.5 million to help establish reading Bright Spots at 100 Clubs throughout the U.S.

Beginning July the Bright Spot Reading Center will feature books geared at youth ages 11 to 15 and will include programming to encourage adolescents to read more and develop a more positive attitude toward reading. Programming will include activities in drama, art and technology; field trips to [insert locations] and service learning projects in order to create reading opportunities in every area of the Club.

The Teen Center at the Boys & Girls Club of Stanton is where the action will be this year with funds from Walmart for a Bright Spot Reading Center. These funds will help us to enhance our reading area for tweens and teens. We plan on reaching 100 tweens and teens this year with great reading for all.

Our first project will be a Children’s Book Drive for our local Library. They have been so good to us that now our members want to do something great for them. During the Month of August we will be holding a Children’s Book Drive. Bring your books to the Club and help us donate 100 books to the Orange County Stanton Branch Library. Helps us to make a Bright Spot for others today.

Our first program will be the Bright Spot Reading Club. Each week tweens and teens will gather in their respective groups to discuss the books, magazines or other reading articles they have read. They will fill out short questioner about what they read. These will be posted for other Club Members to read. .

In addition to the Club’s new Bright Spot Reading Center, Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s teen web site www.myclubmylife.com will serve as a resource for the Club to promote the reading initiative; highlight age-appropriate books and book reviews; and encourage teens and tweens to read more and share their reading experiences with others. Boys & Girls Clubs of Stanton will also strengthen existing and develop new relationships with local libraries to enhance its programs and services.

Boys & Girls Club of Stanton Teens Volunteer at the Irvine Lake Park Mudrun!     

 On April 10th, 2010 Tim took a group of teens to the Irvine Lake Mudrun. Every one had a blast! It was a day to remember. Teens helped out by cheering on , encouraging, directing, and giving out water to participants in the mudrun. We arrived at 7am at the course and helped to the afternoon.

The first event we had was called, “Go Green Community Kickball”, teens shared how to save electricity, water, and the importance of recycling. Then they coached four teams that had environmentally friendly names like “The Blue Water Savers” and the “White Twirly Lights.” Everyone had lots of fun.1st and 2nd Place

Lights ON Afterschool           

The second event was part of our annual “Lights On Afterschool” event. We had parents and members work together on EPA worksheets (One designed by one of our teens), they also had a “EnergyStar Search” game in the gym that kept them moving, a fun physical activity, and also parents and members designed their own CFL energy saving lightbulb.     Our third Energy Star event was titled “Give Thanks- Save Energy” parents and family were invited to have a “Turkey Dinner” and visit our Energy Star Booth to receive “Energy Star” brochures and share how they save energy at home, and discuss new ways they can save energy.           

Our fourth and final Energy Star project was called “Spring Up & Save Energy”, it took place on Monday April 19th, 2010. These past four events brought parents and community members locally to “take a pledge” to save energy in their homes and in their community. Every event featured energy-saving related games and activities; every parent attending the events received a raffle ticket for a 32″ flat screen Energy Star TV. The event included a hotdog dinner for all participants and a chance to win a 32″ flat screen Energy Star TV that was donated by the “Best Buy” store in Westminster. The event was a success thanks to the EPA for the materials and CFL bulbs that all our participants received, and to the “Best Buy” of Westminster for the 32″ flat screen Energy Star TV.

October 2009        

 We started a program called “The Purpose to Travel”. The past five years of this program has been a great success. Our teens get to travel and play a sport that brings guys and girls together. Its fun to see them practice teamwork. Our final Energy Star project          

August 2009 On Mondays Tim the Teen Director taught a “Money Matters” class for teens. Teens that participated learned the importance of budgeting, how to manage a checkbook, how to use a credit card, and how to save money.          

July 2009 The teens took a trip to the beach and enjoyed running through the sand, jumping into the water, and snacking on hotdogs and smores.

Teens can prepare for their future with--
“Project: AIM FIRE”. AIM FIRE is an acronym for Ambition In My Future In Retaining Excellence. This program was created to inspire young adults to be successful, by instilling in them the importance of preparing for their future, and to strengthen their desire to reach and maintain excellence throughout life. Hopefully each member will AIM to reach their full potential and FIRE to accomplish their aspired short and long term goals. Objectives include: Taking part in a group environmental or Good Cause Project, visiting and tour college(s), attending a job fair, “Club Community Service”, creating a fundraiser, Money Matters program (or equivalent program), Big Brother/Big Sister Program, and planning a teen event (ex. dance, tournament). When the eight objectives are completed a $200 Ipod will be rewarded.

Teens & Staples
Staples has a new way for Club youths to raise awareness of recycling and raise funds too. Our teens are collecting used/empty printer cartridges, any make from any printer. For every cartridge we turn in to Staples we receive $3.00 back. What a deal, if you have any questions you may contact our Teen Director Tim for details.          

Orange County Register November ’06 IRVINE – Taco Bell announced today that it is offering a lifetime of Taco Bell food to the first person who agrees to trade a new PlayStation 3 game console. Taco Bell will then donate the PlayStation 3 to the Stanton Teen Center of the Boys & Girls Club. “The PlayStation 3 is on every teen’s holiday wish list,” said Bob Fulmer, Taco Bell Foundation executive director. “That’s why we’re offering one lucky individual tacos for life in exchange for giving Boys & Girls Club teens a gift that will keep them in the game.”          

Update 10/21/09: The teens have been enjoying Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Guitar Hero 5, Van Halen, and Burnout:Paradise City.

Regular club hours: 2:00pm to 6:00pm

Early Bird Hours: We open at 7:00am

The Early bird Program is $35 a week or $10 per day per child. If you are in need of this service, you must come in and fill our paperwork. During the Early Bird Program a breakfast and lunch will be provided. Call for more details.

All new members – parents – guardians are required to attend ORIENTATION before becoming a member!

Schedule:

Every Monday & Thursday at 5:30pm sharp!

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to Orientation.

Orientation is estimated to be 30 minutes.

Late comers will not be permitted, so be sure to come EARLY!

This summer the Club will be providing a free healthy breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack for all members during the summer months. This program is provided by Second Harvest Food Bank.

Learning Center

This summer our focus will be on Education and having Fun.

Power Hour- Educational Games and Activities

Computer Tutor and More -

Plus join us for the “Bright Spot for Reading Initiative for Adolescents” this summer, this program is funded by Walmart Foudation.

Lean Start – New

This is a FREE program for caregiver’s of children ages 3 to 5. It is a comprehensive and prevention plan to help children reach their optimal level in health. A caregiver is anyone who takes care of children i.e. parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle or even a preschool teacher or aide. Please call 714-891-0740 to find out dates and times.

Teen Center

This unique area of the Club is for 7th grade and up. Education is our top priority with fun added in. Get involved in our AIM FIRE and Money Matters, and visit a college campus. This summer we will have two special field trips check out the bulletin board for dates.

Arts & Crafts

Oh What Fun We Are Going To Have. Each week check out the cool creative projects you can make. This summer we are bringing back Cheer Leading and Lili will be teaching us how. Check the day and time in the Arts & Crafts Department.

Games room & Playground

Check out the Fun in both of these areas. They will be listed up on the Club Bulletin Board for all of the Fun Tournaments and Contest that we will be having. There will be Water Melon Eating, Water Balloon Activities and more.

Triple Play.. Check out the Gamesroom Bulletin Board for the Triple Play Schedule throughout the Club this summer. There will be loads of fun all summer long.

Come join Robert our Athletic Director every Tuesday and Thursday for our Hip Hop Class this summer! Organized beginner sessions will be held throughout the day and more advanced sessions will be taught during afternoon hours. We will be learning basic Hip Hop moves and choreography created by Kristen Egusa that will be taught by Robert our Athletic Director.

 Our 18^th Annual Friends Day, is just around the corner.  Our Friends Day began many years ago as a wonderful reason to recognize our younger people doing extraordinary things.   We feel it’s important that our children be recognized for all they do, and to celebrate them and their accomplishments!  With the challenges our kids face each day and the hurdles they overcome, we support them 100% in becoming “caring responsible citizens”.
